Surface Waves
The third type of wave is a surface wave. This wave can be seen on any water surface during a windy day. Although it looks like a transverse wave, a surface wave is really a rolling wave. You can feel this effect in a wave pool. If you lie on a foam pad during the wave action in the pool, you can feel yourself bobbing up-and-down and back and forth, in a circular motion. This is the rolling effect. Note that your position in the pool doesn’t change much.
You can experiment with this in your bath with a rubber duck—it really is a science experiment!
Drawing surface waves is tricky. This is a simple diagram of how they move.
The video below shows the circular movement of particles that create a typical surface wave. The yellow dots are meant to help you isolate the movement of two of the many dots in the image, but all of the dots are moving in similar ways.
