Research Assignment
Instructions: Many instruments have been used to produce or detect different types of electromagnetic radiation. For example:
- transmitters and receivers of radio and telecommunications signals (emitters of radio waves)
- infrared sensors, to detect the heat of living things at night, or to scan the barcodes of grocery items
- X-ray machines to look at your bone structure
- satellites that can pick up and detect different types of radiation
- a one-page, 350 to 500 word assignment
- a Web page
- a video presentation
Gather information from a variety of sources, including books, magazines, videos, and the Internet. Be sure to include all your resources in a bibliography.
ASSESSMENT GUIDELINESThis assignment is worth 50 marks, based on the following:
- Introduction: what is the device? What is the device used for? - a type of telescope, a communications device, a satellite used for scientific research or spying, etc.? (5 marks)
- Describe what type of electromagnetic radiation the device produces, detects, or uses. (5 marks)
- Explain or show how the device works. This is the most important part of your assignment. You will need to show the different parts of the device and explain their function in helping the device produce, detect, or use electromagnetic radiation. Pictures, diagrams, models, etc., will be very useful here. (25 marks)
- Explain why you believe this device is important or useful or valuable. Here you will be stating your opinion. (10 marks)
- Bibliography, which is a list of all the sources of information used in your project. This should include Web URLs, titles and authors of books and magazine articles, etc. If you copy and paste anything from the internet, it needs to be referenced correctly. Only hand in your own work (Do not try to pass off someone else's work for your own or you will receive a mark of zero). (5 marks)
